Sculpture in the Gaol Exhibition

Conditions of Entry

Trial Bay Gaol is an archaeological site; thus, all entries must be free standing as no ground works will be undertaken. Works can be displayed in Gaol cells, on grass or concrete. Strong winds are experienced inside the Gaol and during rain the site is exposed to large puddles which form on concrete surfaces.

All submissions will require the following information;

Entry Form/s

There are two categories available for sculpture entries, subject to the curator’s discretion;

Category A: Large metal and/or timber sculptures

Category B: Small metal, timber and/or mixed media sculptures

Schools Photographic/Art Exhibition can be either A3 or A4 size must relate to the Macleay area with the theme “From the Mountains to the Sea”.

All school students in the Macleay area are encouraged to enter the Schools Sculpture in the Gaol Exhibition and/or the Schools Photographic/Art Exhibition however we can only accept two entries per school and suggest that all schools pre-judge the entries.

If you would like your sculpture, artwork or photographs displayed in one of the South West Rocks businesses as part of the Escapee Trail exhibition please complete the Escapee Trail Entry Form. All works exhibited in the Escapee Trail must be priced FOR SALE.

  • No more than ½ A4 description of each work i.e.
  • How long did it take to construct your masterpiece and what inspired you to create it?
  • What does it represent?
  • What does it mean to you and does it have a story to tell?
  • Dimensions, materials used and type of construction.
  • Digital jpg. photographs or drawings
  • Price, if the work is for sale
  • Description of all aspects of the work’s installation and demonstration of its ability to stand safely.
  • Address and contact details, including email.

There is no entry fee to exhibit. Artists agree that their entry/entries remain available for the length of the exhibition, including sold items, from 6th August – 2nd September 2017. Entries must be the original work of the entrant and may have been in other competitions. Work/s that are deemed to pose a risk to public safety will be rejected, and any glass used must be toughened.

Entries close on Friday, 16th June 2017 at 5.00pm. Late entries will not be accepted.

Selection of works

An independent selection panel will view all images and select the exhibition from all entries received. Entrants will be notified by Friday 23rd June 2017, whether or not their work/s have been selected. The management committee reserves the right to reject any submission without giving a reason and no correspondence will be entered into. Delivered work/s which are not representative of the entry design may also not be accepted. Exhibiting artists are invited to price their works for sale (no commission charged).

Insurance and Transport

All insurance/s and transport to and from the Gaol is the responsibility of the artist. The organisers exercise all due care and diligence but will not accept liability for loss or damage to work/s.

Sites

There is a wide range of sites available for positioning work/s. Many of these are able to be viewed on the website. The committee will take submissions on site specific works into consideration; however, the final decision of the exhibition’s layout will rest with the curator.

The Gaol is a coastal location and subject to strong winds. Entries will be sited accordingly. If your entry/entries requires electricity it must have a current safety tag attached from a qualified electrician.

Note: If your entry is to be displayed in cells the doorway height is 180cm x width 60cm.

Delivery of Works

Entries must be delivered to Trial Bay Gaol and installed on Thursday 3rd or Friday 4th August, between 9am and 3pm or Saturday 5th August 2017, between 9am and 12pm only, unless prior arrangements have been made. The curator will liaise with the exhibitor over times and installation details.

Note: Site entry is through the main entrance gate with a maximum height of 3.3m and width 2.9m.

Collection of Works

Entries can be collected on Saturday 2nd September 2017 after the winners are announced at 1pm or on Monday 4th September between 9am and 3pm, unless prior arrangements have been made.

Any work/s left in the Gaol after that time will become the property of the committee.

Copyright

The committee reserves the right to reproduce any image of entry for the purpose of publicity. All necessary acknowledgements of authorship will be made.

The Exhibition

Closure of exhibition and announcement of winners – 1.00pm, Saturday 2nd September 2017

There is over $5000 worth of prizes to be won in various categories of the Sculpture in the Gaol Exhibition. The prizes have been kindly donated by businesses of South West Rocks and National Parks and Wildlife Service.

People’s Choice Award

There are 2 major prize categories as well as a prize for runners up in both Category A and B.

Category A: Large metal and/or timber sculptures

Category B: Small metal, timber and/or mixed media sculptures

Random Sculpture Draw

This year we will be selecting a random sculpture draw winner, chosen by the Sculpture in the Gaol committee. The random sculpture draw winner excludes prize winners of the 2017 Sculpture in the Gaol exhibition, Schools and Escapee Trail entrants.

School Entries

There are prizes in both the Schools Sculpture in the Gaol Exhibition and the Photographic/Art Exhibition for both Primary and High School entrants.

The Sculpture in the Gaol winners will again be chosen by popular vote of the viewers and announced at the closure of the sculpture exhibition at the Seabreeze Beach Hotel in South West Rocks. The decision of the committee is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Monday, 7th August 2017 to Saturday 2nd September 2017, NATIONAL PARKS AND WILDLIFE SERVICE will be charging normal gate entry fees during the exhibition.
